Make the Most of Your Time By Exercising Efficiently

I think “busy” is the new buzz word in Alberta, or maybe even all across Canada. I don’t know anyone that isn’t “busy” all the time, weekdays, weekends, even holidays. It seems this is the norm for our society these days. There’s nothing wrong with being busy, well actually there’s two things wrong with being continually busy. It doesn’t affect everyone but it does affect many. These two things are proportionally related, stress and poor health.

Poor health is a result of bad habits, lack of exercise and too much stress. Stress is a result of all the responsibilities of being busy, poor health, and bad habits. Read that a few times, it reminds me of that old commercial about getting a job, “I can’t get any experience because I can’t get a job, I can’t get a job because I don’t have any experience.” You get my point.

There are a great number of variables in life, some you can’t control, and some you can. Bad habits and lack of exercise are two things I know a little about. I hear reasons everyday why people are too busy to exercise or why it’s hard to eat well. Let’s look at it a different way. Let’s think about fitness and nutrition the same way we think about an investment. When we invest financially in something we are expecting a bigger reward than our initial commitment, and we are expecting our investment to work for us while we can be “busy” doing other things.

Fitness can be the same way. Your fitness and nutrition is an investment. The foods you choose for lunch today will determine how your body functions tomorrow, whether you are too tired for that critical mid-afternoon business meeting or that late night shift out on the worksite. The better foods you choose the better your body will work in the next 24-48 hours and the more sustained your energy levels will be day in day out. This will make you a more productive person.

Exercise can also work like an investment, except with one spectacular difference, your rate of return is directly related to your continual commitment and it is 100% guaranteed! You probably don’t have multiple hours to dedicate to exercise each day, if you’re like many people you have but a few hours a week you can commit to exercise. You need to make the most of it. You don’t want an exercise program that burns calories while you workout but doesn’t continue to burn calories after the conclusion of the workout. You want a workout that will continue to keep your metabolism on fire for 24-48 hours after. You want a return on your investment.

Sporadic cardio sessions and low intensity resistance training offer little post training benefit. On the other hand high intensity resistance training and regular consistent cardio and interval training have been proven to maintain an elevated metabolic rate for up to 48 hours. If you work out efficiently on Monday you could be burning calories all the way into Wednesday’s workout without doing anything extra!

Make the most out of your time and capitalize on your investment. Not only will you receive the extended benefit from one workout to the next your rate of return compounds over time just like a financial one. The long term effects of exercise will ensure a reduction of risk factors for major illnesses such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, and osteoporosis to name a few. Additional muscle mass has a voracious caloric appetite and continues to chew away at calories 24/7. The more muscle mass you carry the more calories you can burn, the more power you can generate, and the more flexible you can become. Your fitness investment is the safest and most secure investment you will ever make, it will never let you down.
