Tammy Cunnington – International Wheelchair Athlete

Tammy Cunnington is an international wheelchair athlete competing in triathlons and handcycle racing. She was injured when she was six years old in an incredible accident where she was actually hit by an airplane! Tammy also downhill sit-skis, kayaks, boxes and participates in any other sport or activity that she can try, showing that the only impossibilities are the ones we create for ourselves. By sharing her story she wishes to remind others that any obstacle can be overcome with some hard work and that the benefits are 100% worth it every single time!

“I began training at One-1-Fitness in the spring of 2008. At this point I had been training on my own for a few years and competing in sprint distances races but I was not improving. Every year was the same thing, my speeds were the same, I could only lift the same weight, and my overall fitness was the same. I turned to One-1-Fitness for help. The team there has been super supportive and hugely helpful to me. With the work they put me through I was finally able to achieve my goal of jumping from sprint distance to Olympic distance. My strength has increased so much and now I can climb almost any hill on my hand cycle. The strength increase has also really improved my skiing ability, now I actually downhill ski rather than downhill crash. My injury rate has decreased and my km/hr has increased. The strong work ethic and positive attitude of the team at One-1-Fitness has helped me reach my goals and I know they will continue to help me achieve the even tougher goals I have set for the future.”

My mother always said I should aim high and reach for new heights; this might not have been what she had in mind…
It`s hard to believe that in just six weeks from now I will leave everything familiar behind and embark on what will undoubtedly be one of the greatest adventures I`ve ever experienced. I will travel half way around the world, I will truly been an outsider, if that alone isn`t enough I will join a small team of committed individuals I`ve never met on a six day trek through jungle, desert, snow and ice. We will walk 100 kilometres, experience a 50 degree temperature change and climb to nearly 6000 metres. A daunting task for a guy who hasn`t slept in a tent for nearly a decade, never been in a sleeping bag below zero, and has no idea what it`s like to hike for miles or what oxygen deprivation is like. To say that I am intimidated by this coming experience and uncomfortable about not knowing what to expect is an understatement. Those fears however, pale in comparison to what it must be like to live each day with real fears of death and disease from things like typhoid, cholera, and E. Coli. These forms of illness are practically unimaginable for you and I. Or to think of how laborious it must be to carry water for miles every day for your family. Maybe on summit day the effects of high elevation will allow me to relate as I carry my 30lb, ergonomically designed to fit totally comfortable, day pack up those final steps, but then probably not really.
On March 1, 2010 my adventure begins. As a member of a 30 person team I will trek up the slopes of mount Kilimanjaro, Africa`s tallest peak. Collectively we will face this challenge in tribute to those that live with real fears and even more real daily challenges to maintain the most basic quality of life. Hopefully by now you are both fascinated and curious why myself, and 29 others like me, would travel half way around the globe to participate in something they never dreamed of doing. As it was with that same curiosity that One-to-1 Fitness client and local climb participant Glenn Moore inspired me to join this adventure and raised my awareness to an organization called The Water School.
The Water School is a Canadian based organization that has a mission to share a very amazingly simple, inexpensive, and practical method of providing safe, clean water for the developing world. SODIS is a method of solar disinfection that requires only a simple plastic bottle, a piece of tin and some sunshine. Simple items that we throw in the garbage every single day can completely change the life of 100s, 1000s, likely millions. Living in Red Deer it`s difficult to imagine having to walk to Innisfail to fetch a pail of hopefully clean drinking water from a basic well each day, in fact just imagine going 24 hours without being able to turn on a faucet of any kind or flush a toilet, our way of life would seemingly cease to exist. Bringing the Gift of Fitness to Kids With Special Needs

One-to-1 Fitness was delighted to provide the children of the Oriole Park School Pathways program a Nintendo Wii and Wii Fit for Christmas. When we received the fundraising call from psychologist who consults for the program it really only took about 30 seconds for us to realize this was a cause perfectly aligned with our vision statement, and one that we had to support.

The Pathways program students are generally students that find it hard to engage in the activities of a typical physical education class. These students are often affected by sensory issues from lights, noises, and all the commotion of a busy class, or physical limitations that require a little extra time or accomodation to fully participate. It’s safe to say that regular fitness and activity can sometimes be a real challenge. Recent years have brought to the forefront that within our general population our children are not as active as they used to be. Child obesity and child diabetes are now very real concerns greatly on the rise.
School faculty Jesse Dodds explained that the use of technology fits well with the keen curiosity the students exhibit. The Wii and and especially the Wii Fit are motion or action based allowing that curiosity for technology and video games to set a habit of regular activity for the students. Because the software also tracks progress this can be used to help evaluate the student’s progress with regular activity and provide a reference for them as to how they are improving. It’s also hoped that having the Wii and Wii Fit will also increase positive interaction between classrooms and all the students of the school.
Adam Josh and myself had a great time visiting the school and getting the kids set up with the Wii. What was especially amazing was to see one of the students experience what running might be like for the very first time. (Pictured above) We would like to both thank and wish a Merry Christmas to Oriole Park School, the Pathways program and faculty for allowing One-to-1 Fitness the opportunity to bring the gift of fitness to your students, we look forward to hearing about your progress.
